PIMPS & LIARS

Wednesday, December, 3, 2008

The media is killing young girls. I hold them exclusively responsible for our daughters' bulimia, anorexia, and low self esteem. I hold them accountable every time a teenage girl sobs her eyes out and sticks her finger down her throat because she thinks she's too fat, too ugly, and too irrelevant. The media, as far as I'm concerned, should be liable for its reckless, monstrous behavior, and its despicable, in your face, lies. And if I had any say in the media's consequences for their offences, I would send several of these pimps directly to hell.

Yeah, you heard me right, Pimps.  They search out young, vulnerable girls and pay them for their images, their asses, their breasts, their long legs, and their innocence.  They hide behind Armani suits, designer ties, and superficiality…but in reality they prowl around in black capes sucking the blood from our girls, our society, our culture.

I’m mad as hell about this and you should be, too.

"The ideal for feminine beauty has evolved into an even thinner standard due to such media examples as Miss America contestants, Playboy centerfolds, and female models in magazine advertisements. On television, there is a thinner standard for beauty for women than for men. When comparisons are made among the content of diet and fitness articles in men and women's magazines, it is evident that women are exposed to more weight-loss material than men are. Despite a significant increase in the society's emphasis on health and fitness in the U.S. from 1960 to 1992, male body shape ideals have not changed (Effect of the Media on Eating Disorders, Hilbert College).

It is apparent the media has great power and influence.  I mean, they sell toothpaste, mouthwash, lipstick, and deodorant with breasts for god’s sake.  They place a stick thin girl on the screen with her boobs hanging out of her skin tight shirt and try to convince us that if  we use that particular toothpaste, not only will we acquire pearly white teeth, but we will have big ones just like her, a body just like her.

Give me a freaking break, man.

Young girls cannot compete with the likes of Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohen, Heidi Klum, and Brittany Spears; these women cannot even compete with themselves! Young girls cannot live up to the women in magazines whom have their g-stings stuck so far up their arses that they can’t walk strait;  women so polished and perfect that it’s not natural or attainable or conceivable.

Stop it!

Ask a girl (any girl) who her hero is now-a-days and believe me, she’s not going to announce Angelou or Bentancourt, Clinton or Rice.  But she may answer Heff’s girls, Klum, Hilton, and Spears; she may say America’s top model.  GAG. PUKE.YUCK. And I’m stuck here wondering why a chick without panties, without a mission, and without depth would be interesting, why a chick with wings plunged deeply inside her back would have any more substance than a mere rock, why weighing 90 pounds, having zero zits, and tossing one’s bleached blonde hair around like the town idiot would allow access into minds, hearts, and lives. I’m stuck scratching my head.  Aren’t you?

So, what do our girls do? They puke and stuff laxatives into their mouths. They starve themselves. They begin to despise themselves. They look inside the mirror and scream, “If only I were thinner. If only I could lose 10 pounds.  If only I were prettier. If only I were like her and her and her.

If only…If only…If only I were not ME.

The Pimps spill their lies on the screen, inside magazines, and on bulky billboards… "You should look like a supermodel, a playboy bunny, Miss teen America, a Victoria Secret angel, a nip/tuck makeover, anything but who you are, because who you are—is not goodenough.  You are not good enough.

Aren’t you sick of the lies, the superficiality, the sucking of blood, and the deception?

    Well, aren’t you?

Ugh, that picture is sickening and NOT attractive! Women need body fat to perform one of our most basic and beautiful functions--nurturing new life. Yes, I've gone up a pants size in the last few months, and I've been whining about it--but I've been comparing myself to women in fitness and fashion magazines, not to REAL women. When it comes to real women, we're all perfect the way we are, as long as we're healthy. That's what matters.

Do you want to know the sickest thing about those "thin" models? Most of them have sky-high body fat percentages because they don't work out- if they worked out, they'd gain muscle and weigh more, so they don't do it. I read an article on it in Self or Fitness a few years ago. Many of their body fat percentages were upwards of 35 and 40, where a healthy percentage for (non-athlete) women is between 18 and 24. It's disgusting- they're willing to sacrifice their health and be walking gobs of subcutaneous fat and no muscle at all just for appearances' sake. Makes me sick.

I agree 100%! Even when I WAS one of those girls (another lifetime it seems!) I was never so thin my bones showed - but still unrealistic and not so healthy. I was 5'11 and weighed 135 average. A few years ago Emma came home from school and said she didn't eat all her lunch "because she was getting fat" and I let her have it! In a nice way, hopefully. She is a perfect size, and when we do talk about body image (even at 10 she has issues sometimes) it's about being active and healthy - I never ever tell her she is getting fat (not even close to it!) but if she wants to know we discuss how to stay healthy, as in less junk food and more outside play. She even works out with me at home! And we all know magazines are airbrushed... a whole other rant there. http://conversationswchristine.spaces.live.com
