A good reason to party

Tuesday, November, 25, 2008

I keep telling Mr. Wonderful we need to have a party every three months. Why? So we’ll deep-clean the house, that’s why.

It’s only been a little over a year since we hosted our wedding party here, and the house sparkled that day. Since then both cats – the rotten Z girls – have each shed enough fur to paste together at least a litter’s worth of kittens, Mr. Wonderful has misplaced a drawer full of socks (many recently found beneath the couch when we rearranged the living room), I’ve left stacks of to-be-filed papers all over my corner of the house and dust from – I don’t know – the planet Dustron – has settled all over the place.

We have had little gatherings since our wedding party, of course. I mean, our dining room table does convert into a poker table after all. And, always the minute before guests arrive, I stop to admire the glittering floors and cat-box free aroma, the spotless sink, the dander-free furniture and carpet with perfect steam cleaner marks.

Of course, by the next Monday it’s obvious the maid gave up on us and went home, but, still, for those few glorious moments – even if we haven’t stopped panting from scrubbing and sweeping yet – I feel like I’ve got all my oodles together.

Yes, I can do everything and keep a spotless house. Giggle, giggle, smile and nod. Sure can. I’m WONDER WOMAN. That’s right, the place is always this shiny and lemony-fresh.

So, since we’re staying home this Thanksgiving (Mr. Wonderful’s on call – thank him when you pick up your cell phone and it works!), we’ve decided to have a post-Thanksgiving informal gathering at our place. It’s a pie party, really, but don’t tell our guests; that part’s a surprise.

I might have told you already, Mr. Wonderful has perfected pumpkin pie. But, in addition to that, he’s making a blueberry pie (my fave) and we’re going to put together six different kinds of turkey pot pie. This is very exciting because we just nabbed pie crust shape cutters from Williams Sonoma. Stars for my blueberry and leaves for the pumpkin... diamonds and ornaments for the rest.

I’m in charge of vegetable dishes, which includes Trader Joe’s kick ass pumpkin bread (Have you had any? It’s heavenly...) and my famous black bean soup. (No where in “pie party” did I indicate any health food was going to be served, did I?)

We’re hoping for a big crowd, even if it means this year on Thanksgiving Day we’ll be worshiping with Lysol and our friend, the mop.

If you’re going to be in Charlotte, let me know. The more... well, the bigger the poker pot. Giggle, giggle, smile and nod.

The party sounds great, and I can completely empathize with your need to have guests over so that the house will be clean. It seems like the only time our apartment is white-glove-test worthy is when one of us has family coming down to Florida to visit. I mean, all the important things get disinfected and scrubbed all the time (bathroom, vanity, kitchen, floors), but I confess that I don't dust every week and little piles of my stuff seem to follow me around the apartment.

The pie party was a hit. We had Cajun turkey pot pie, traditional turkey pot pie, enchilada turkey pot pie-- catching a theme here?, and black bean and pumpkin soup. For dessert: blueberry pie (with a star-filled top crust), pumpkin pie, all sorts of shortbread cookies, banana bread, pumpkin (another theme perhaps?) bread and more.

Kids came. Neighbors came. Coworkers came. The guys stayed up until nearly 3 a.m. playing poker, long after my friend Lisa and I passed out on the couch after one too many ginger and rum cocktails and... good news... Mr. Wonderful won! Better news: he split the pot with me for no reason whatsoever! (God, I love that man.)

We may make the pie party an annual tradition. It was a load of fun... and quite tasty.

Hope you all had a fantastic Turkey Day.
