Are there phrases that annoy the crap out of you? I know I overuse seriously, but seriously I said it a lot before it became a thing on Grey's Anatomy.
I also said not so much years before everyone else started (you don't have to take my word some of my friends will tell you it's true.) So what phrases make you just want to slap someone?
Well, thanks to a friend I learned. Oxford University recently compiled the top ten most irritating phrases:
1 - At the end of the day
2 - Fairly unique
3 - I personally
4 - At this moment in time
5 - With all due respect
6 - Absolutely
7 - It's a nightmare
8 - Shouldn't of
9 - 24/7
10 - It's not rocket science
The study also found "Other phrases to irritate people are "literally" and "ironically", when they are used out of context." And yes, that does bother me more than I can say. After working in a TV newsroom for all these years I'd like to add a few other phrases that make me want to scream and throw things:
1 - Mother Nature -- seriously who is she?
2 - Lucky to be alive -- aren't we all?
3 - Blaze -- okay while just a word not really a phrase-- come on it's a fire people!
4 - ATM machine -- the M is for machine
5 - Breathing a sigh of relief -- used so much during hurricane season and sounds silly every time
6 - Brutal murder -- are there any other kind of murders?
7 - Arson fire -- it's redundant, an arson is a fire
9 - Completely destroyed -- it's either destroyed or it isn't!
10 - More questions than answers -- then you aren't doing your job as a journalist are you?
One of my former employees even put Post-It notes on his computer to remind him not to use many of these phrases. So which phrases annoy you most boys and girls? I want you to share.
Stylishly yours,
Miss Attitude

Ditto PIN number and VIN number. That's like saying "Personal Identification Number Number" and "Vehicle Identification Number Number". ARGH!

Not that I'm a ________ (fill in the blank), but... The fact that one must declare what they are not before they demonstrate the quality of a person who is that "thing" makes no sense to me.

"Like" is obviously a word and not a phrase, but it drives me crazy. So does "you know" drive me insane. You know?
