We've all had stressful times in life; lack of sleep, an over loaded brain, and a general feeling of numbness. Unfortunately, this place also enables a very short temper. Yesterday I was in Quiznos and was so bothered by the fact that the people behind the counter barely spoke English and had no clue what a wrap was. The manager even had to come over to tell me that they had "sammies" not wraps because the counter people were looking around like I was speaking German, another language they would not have known. I reluctantly agreed to wheat bread with hot mustard…they put on honey mustard. I said to my friend, "I apparently need to learn to speak Spanish!" They were able to fix the honey/hot mustard issue (notice how this minor thing has become an official ISSUE in my over stressed brain) when I notice they don't have Diet Coke only Pepsi. What in the heck? The Subway by my house has wraps AND Diet Coke. What in the world is happening here? How can there be such discrepancies between two restaurants within 5 miles of each other? I choose Root Beer. They put lettuce on my sandwich and proceed to wrap it up…I stop them saying, "Wait! I wanted more than just lettuce; I would like pickles, spinach and black olives!" The non English speaker looks at me like a deer in the headlights, obviously not understanding, while slowly unwrapping my sandwich to add the other ingredients. I pay and leave. Half way back to the office thinking back on the experience it hits me…I was not in a Subway, I was in a Quiznos. Turns out I was the one speaking the foreigh language...I was speaking Subway in a Quiznos! How in the world can anyone be so clueless?? There are huge Q's all over the store, the set up is different, the color scheme is different. Am I really THAT stressed that I didn't even know where I was??? Apparently. What really bothered me was how I could have been so selfish and inconsiderate. Sure, their ability to speak the language of the country they are in would have lessened my upset, but I digress. Who knew that stress causes people to become self centered! Have you ever looked around you? Go sit at a restaurant sometime, especially during lunch and just watch. Most people are so focused on the project they have to get back to that they can't even break a smile to their server. It's all about them and their time schedule. Does getting your lunch 30 seconds faster make all the difference? If so, you were not at a good stopping point and you should have lunched later! Now on one hand I understand that you don't want bad service and it helps when your server speaks the same language you do, however is it that hard to get out of your own brain for a minute so you can bring yourself to be considerate of those around you? I am admittedly the queen of angry driving. How horrible is that? Why would you take your anger out like that? On a total stranger! I've decided that I will make a conscious effort to be less self focused and to be more thoughtful of those around me. If you are guilty of this kind of behavior, I challenge you to do the same. Why make someone else take the brunt of your stress or worse, pass your bad mood along to them so they take it out on someone else? I am challenging myself and you too dear reader. Let's pass along good moods. And if you can't…then have a glass of wine and go back to bed. =)

This post makes me think about one of my Pastor's sermons--he said, "In your work, social events or where-ever, would people be surprised if someboody said, Kim is a Christian?" So...everywhere I go- I am very aware of this statement....even the grocery store. And anyhow, I haaate conflict. I try to be a very nice girl! Thanks for the reminder, though:)

This was great and I totally understood where you were coming from. I was on the phone with my insurance co the other day, and the girl kept referring to my now, non-existant 2nd insurance company as blue cross and I have humana and finally it was at the point (after an hour) of her no listening to me that I was going "No, still don't have Blue cross, never did, just Humana. HUMANA. H-U-M-A-N-A. Humana." Probably didn't have to come off that rude but I was, as you said, in my own little world.

All I can say is that being there was hilarious! I was equally confused from both ends! Since I can clearly speak spanish the Quizno's girls looked at me for help, but in Sisterfreese's defense, she really did think she was in Subway!
We all have blooper moments! Have no fear! I do agree, we have to spread the love, funny blog! :)

I totally hear ya. It is so hard sometimes to remember that we need to remain calm and respect others in situations like this. And while it would be wonderful to live in a world with outstanding customer service always, we don't necessarily live in a perfect world, and people do have bad days. This is a great reminder to add humor to situations like, making the experience better for EVERYONE :)

O.K. So I've had two attempts at responding to your experience. It's been two hours in the making and I've lost my precious response twice already. Giving up at this point this evening. Will respond in detail later. Trust me, you'll want to hear about it!. Anyhow, to the ladies that don't know me, you'll wish you did. I'm a dude and I don't wear a skirt and I don't squat before I squirt. (No this isn't a pick-up line, but if you have a boat or a bayhouse, I'm willing to compromise "duties" :"Previous duty details include "Going to Funky Town"). And to the "one" that does know me, wish you were closer to experience all the times that "Rock" A-haw-haw-haw!! !in Austin! Will catch up with you soon! LYLT!
